Free Speech Canada - An Oxymoron
There's definitely a moron in there somewhere...
Free Canukistan has a pretty good wrap up of the big 'Ann Coulter' scandal/non-scandal/scandal. National Post also has a round-up of the American reaction to Canadian hospitality/PC ridiculousness. Lorne Gunter puts in his two cents. Univ.of Ottawa doesn't quite defend itself.
Too bad that students are getting a bad name over this debacle. It's really their parents' fault. Parents have been allowing the public schools to teach ridiculous political correctness and liberal faux values for decades. Check any public school board mandate for 'social reconstruction' ambitions. Canadian parents are a) too trusting and dependent on government, to the extent of abdicating their parental responsibility to properly educate their children. b) too lazy to figure it all out c) too selfish to care. Take your pick, the result is the same.
I'm speaking from my high horse, of course, since we long ago abandoned the public school system and took on the full responsibility of educating our own children. (We had the advantage of family example , Catholic/Christian imperative, and a familiarity with the public school system and the field of education- my husband has 20 yrs. as teacher/principal, most of it in Canada). Not everyone can or should homeschool, but it is an option for some. Everyone should hold the gov't responsible to provide education that is mandated by the taxpayer, not by left wing academics (like Mr. Houle of today's notoriety) who live in liberal lalaland.
Ann Coulter's response :
I am Canadian, so I feel no remorse in hoping for maximum humiliation for those making us laughingstocks of the 'free' world, and the intelligent world, and the real world.

Since arriving in Canada I've been accused of thought crimes, threatened with criminal prosecution for speeches I hadn't yet given and denounced on the floor of the Parliament (which was nice because that one was on my "bucket list").
Posters advertising my speech have been officially banned, while posters denouncing me are plastered all over the University of Ottawa campus. Elected officials have been prohibited from attending my speeches. Also, the local clothing stores are fresh out of brown shirts.
Welcome to Canada!

"Only Mansbridge's Hairdresser Knows For Sure.."

At SDA :
Everyone knows the details already, but the basic facts are essential here: former MP Rahim Jaffer was charged last year with drunk driving and drug possession. Several days ago, under an agreement reached between his lawyer and an Ontario provincial Crown prosecutor, Jaffer pleaded guilty to lesser charges. The provincial prosecutor said there was no reasonable prospect of a conviction on the more serious charges; according to this report, police sources said that "a rookie OPP officer failed to follow proper procedures during a strip search of Jaffer."
Now, keeping in mind that at the time he was charged Jaffer was neither a Conservative MP nor working for the Conservatives in any capacity whatsoever (they had long since elbowed him out of the nomination race in his riding), and that his plea deal was reached with the Crown prosecutor, not the judge, in a provincial jurisdiction that the federal government absolutely has no say in, take a look at a sampling of what various media and opposition members had to say:
David Akin: "Turns out the judge in the case, Doug Maund, is a long-time Tory."
Jane Taber: "Stephen Harper’s tough-on-crime Conservatives were accused of being not-so-tough when it comes to one of their own..."
Akin, again: "Jaffer's former caucus colleagues immediately tried to distance themselves from the (Crown prosecutor's) decision."
Peter Mansbridge, introducing the top story on The National: "As a Conservative
Member of Parliament Rahim Jaffer was known for his tough stand on crime. Now, the opposition says he's a Tory example of another kind: hypocrisy!"
Liberal MP Anita Neville, seen bellowing in the HOC on The National: "The Conservatives are conspicuously silent...when the law is being flouted by one of their own."
Toronto Lawyer Russell Silverstein, on The National: "You know, when the public sees somebody charged with drunk driving and possession of cocaine who's politically connected..."
Unidentified man-on-the-street, on The National: "Ex-Conservative MP, married to the Minister of State for Women's Affairs - I mean obviously they're going to drop the charges, they had no choice." ....
...Someone at the CBC made a decision to broadcast, coast-to-coast, an unidentified individual's statement that a particular provincial Crown prosecutor - someone who has a name, a professional reputation, and a family - rendered a decision based not on the law he's been sworn to uphold but on political interference from someone outside his jurisdiction, and that our sitting government illegally interfered in a court case in a provincial jurisdiction - and all without one single shred of evidence.
Was it urgent, serious, and of public importance for the CBC to nationally broadcast a categorical, unproven allegation of serious wrongdoing made by an unidentified member of the public? Was the unidentified individual's honest statement of opinion in any way based on fact? ...
....Vile, unethical, unprofessional journalism - and it only costs us a billion dollars a year.
One can't help but wonder about those Canadians who still get the bulk of their news from the CBC. (Presumably, there are still some). Can people be so disinterested in what's actually happening, that they are satisfied to have Mansbridge , in his words, tell them 'what's important about the news'? (i.e. do their thinking for them).
I resent having some (not that pretty) face telling me what I know to be untrue (because I can read and reason), and telling me what I should think about it...on the tax-payer's dime.
As much as I have , over the years, appreciated the classical music programs on CBC2 Radio, it's JUST NOT WORTH IT!

Calling Out The NYT
Mi Causa, Su Causa: a Latina Looks at the N.Y. Times Abortion Debate:
and at Big Journalism
Caramba!
This phrase, in the New York Times article, about pro-life advocates encouraging greater black participation in the right-to-life cause and taking on the legacy of Margaret Sanger, got my attention: “ … the anti-abortion movement, long viewed as almost exclusively white and Republican … ”
Viewed by whom? The mostly melanin-challenged, liberal editorial board of the New York Times? Yeah, right.
First, two words to all of you icky white, colorblind Republicans who have been déclassé enough to take a stand against the assassination of voiceless unborn children throughout the years: Thank you. You are doing the Lord’s work. Keep it up!...

Lemming Press : Star Phoenix, Saskatoon

The Lemming Press strikes again. The Saskatoon Star Phoenix prints an editorial void of fact (making it fiction) and gets set straight by my Dad....
To the Editor,
'The Star Phoenix'
Regarding: The Star Phoenix - February 22, 2010
You really should become more familiar with International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) before demanding more government support for its anti-life advocacy and 'ethnic cleansing' abortion policies. Are you aware, for example, that reducing births of certain ethnic groups and religions is central to the 'raison d'etre' of IPPF? Do Star Phoenix editors share such an abhorrent objective? Beware of IPPF lies covering up their bad policies and practices.
Knowing the answers to three questions may help The Star Phoenix editorials be balanced, truthful and fair. How did IPPF come into being? How is IPPF supported? What are IPPF's objectives?
Margaret Sanger, who founded IPPF, was a racially prejudiced socialite. She was instrumental in establishing IPPF as a non-government bureaucracy, with the primary objective of reducing births of certain undesirables, ie. blacks, latinos, immigrants, Catholics and the poor. She railed against these groups, calling them, "irresponsible breeders". IPPF continues to act in many ways against these same groups.
Planned Parenthood is expert at writing grants and lobbying governments for support, obtaining the majority of its funds this way. The public, however, does not support IPPF to any significant degree. Planned Parenthood operates the largest chain of 'for profit' abortuaries in USA, charging $700 to $1800 for an abortion. The larger the child, the more they charge to kill her. They rarely provide support for post-abortive problems, medical or psychological, sending victims off to local public health facilities.
To believe the lie that abortion is less harmful than birthing for women, one must accept Planned Parenthood's version of truth. The Guttmacher Institute claims to do independent research on life issues, but is actually an IPPF affiliate, designed to deceive legislators, judges and the public with their version of IPPF 'truth'. If you believe your role as editor is to perpetuate IPPF lies in support of the Canadian status quo (no protection whatsoever for the lives of unborn children), then, by all means, accept Guttmacher statistics, listen to Planned Parenthood and put aside contemporary medical and psychological research from impartial studies.
In fact, every honestly run study on the effect of abortion on women describes multiple increases in physical and mental risks vs non-abortive women. Risks increase as numbers of abortions per woman increases. The younger abortions begin, the worse are the effects on her future health. Set an objective reporter to do the research.
Where is concern for women, when IPPF fails to report abortions sought by under-aged girls being abused by older men or a relative, or young girls brought in by a pimp? IPPF simply kills the child for cash, keeping parents of under-aged girls and police in the dark. IPPF routinely sends women they damage to hospital emergency for repairs. Increasingly, however, Planned Parenthood's illegal and unethical operating policies are being brought into the light by a new generation of courageous young women. They tape interviews at IPPF and report 'sting' results to authorities, inspiring investigations and charges, ranging from fraud and assault to criminal negligence causing death. Many cases of abuse of women and girls by abortion providers are before the courts but are rarely reported by media. Maybe there's an editorial responsibility, especially for a newspaper purporting to support women, to report on cases of abuse of women by abortion providers?
Lastly, rather than abandoning reason by conceding that "personal choice" supersedes "human life" as highest and best good, you might consider providing a balanced life issues education for your subscribers. You may easily obtain valid life issues information by reporting objectively on interviews with local "Culture of Life" leaders. Subscribe personally to the Lifesite News online daily report. Lifesite News is a Canadian online news service, the world's foremost news source for life issues. As editor, you may find it profitable to offer a column to Maurice Vellacott, MP, thereby providing an Ottawa insider balance to any further "Culture of Death" infomercials.

Tea Party Tutorial For CNN Reporters...and others
Freedom depends on the ability to be INDEPENDENT. Governments that seek control of 'worker drone' citizens, reduce freedom by increasing taxation, and rendering more and more of the population DEPENDENT on government 'largesse'.
The (media supported) attitude towards the 'Tea Party' movement is indicative of a government that has scorn for workers, feels entitled to their incomes and demands their unquestioning fealty. A government of one hundred days that already has this 'attitude', totally unearned, shows unspeakable audacity. The kind of audacity that shows up infamously throughout history . The audacity of totalitarian elites who 'govern' to control.
Control over income spending.
Control over life and death.
Control over speech and thought.
Stand up for yourself. Every day, stand up. Every day talk back to the paid commercials calling themselves 'news'.(Better yet, find some actual news.) Every day make up your own mind. Question every authoritative decree that comes down the chute - from your kid's school, to your local government. Stand up. Go with that patriotic feeling churning in your gut. Put yourself on the list of people who make their own decisions about education, religion, belief, and family. (You know, that list of potential problems for totalitarian governments). Stand up. Speak up. Raise up a large patriotic American family. Teach them the virtues of true freedom.
Be Independent. Be American!
(This rant might seem strange coming from an ex-pat Canadian, but I'm really counting on Americans to BE AMERICAN. There are far too many polite sheep in the world already.)

"Freespeechapalooza"

Kathy Shaidle, Ezra Levant and Salim Mansur spoke at a 'free speech' event in Canada last week. A Catholic, a Jew and a Muslim explain to Canadians the dangerous restriction of freedoms being imposed by Canadian Human Rights Commissions.
Kathy Shaidle has published her entire speech on her site, and Roy Eappen has video coverage on his site.
Although this was a Canada specific event, it certainly isn't a unique problem. Human rights commissions around the world are doing their best to force 'correctness' on unruly citizens. Freedom is no longer a Western value, but a hindrance to Western governments seeking to align their legislation to conform to UN standards of 'proper belief'. That 'proper belief' would include state imposed syncretism, and total submission to the 'culture of death'. One writer at Brussels Journal concludes that we are now 'post democracy', citizens having become subjects in a 'global' construct run by 'expert elites'.
One wonders who ultimately will remain to benefit , and what the benefits will be in a soulless world of no democracy, no free speech, no children, no elderly, no families or marriage, and no faith?
Encouraging, if for no other reason than the joy of witnessing free expression, are the recent 'tea parties' in the US. Having followed this idea/event online since its inception a few months ago, I can state positively that there is a broad range of political and other 'beliefs' represented by these protesters. Something democratic has been unleashed, and the surest sign of this is the reaction of the media. (Even David Frum can't bring himself to really like the protests - not quite up to his standards of 'articulation'!)
Its going to take a lot of tea to reverse the stifling effect of the 'latte' drinkers, but is it impossible?
Not quite yet.

Lessons in Repression - 'How To Control The Media'
One might argue that the current administration of the US gov't has a handle on media control already, but they just want to make sure it lasts...
Jonah Goldberg:
Read anything about this in your newspaper?
.
Jonah Goldberg:
...The argument from supposedly liberty-loving liberals goes like this: We protect “extreme” and unpopular speech because if that is safe, they’ll never get to our core liberties. If they can ban trash, argue the slippery-slopers, what’s to stop them from banning criticism of politicians?
One problem: While Frank Rich et al. are preening on their soapboxes for making filth as American as apple pie, the government, under Republican and Democratic presidents alike, has been banning criticism of politicians.
Just last week, the Obama administration argued before the Supreme Court that it has no principled constitutional problem with banning books...

"It's Going To Be Quite A Fight!"

The so-called 'Fairness Doctrine' is not going to be put in place without a battle, but Americans believe it will be done. Who can blame their resignation, after witnessing the passing of the stimulus 'plan' without any regard for truth or cooperation.... the style of this gov't is 'cave or be vilified by our media stooges' and the 'gov't control of all media doctrine' will be just the tool POTUS can truly appreciate
Rasmussen:
...Only 26% of voters believe conservatives have an unfair advantage in the media, the argument several senior congressional Democrats use in pushing for the restoration of the Fairness Doctrine. Sixty-four percent (64%) disagree.
Most (52%) liberals say conservatives have an unfair advantage, while 79% of conservatives and 64% of moderates disagree.
Even a majority of Democratic voters (53%) say that conservatives do not have an unfair advantage in the media.
Seventy-four percent (74%) of voters overall say it is possible for just about any political view to be heard in today’s media with the Internet, cable networks, satellite radio, newspapers, radio and TV available. Just 19% disagree.
But 51% say it is at least somewhat likely that the Democratic-controlled Congress will restore the Fairness Doctrine, which requires holders of broadcast licenses to present balanced political coverage of important issues, as determined by the Federal Communications Commission. Fourteen percent (14%) believe it is Very Likely....
... In a survey just before Election Day in November, 68% of voters said reporters covering a political campaign try to help the candidate they want to win, and 51% thought they were trying to help Democratic candidate Barack Obama in 2008. Only seven percent (7%) said reporters were trying to help Republican candidate John McCain.
Fifty-seven percent (57%) of Republicans oppose government-mandated political balance on all radio stations, while the plurality of Democrats (49%) support it. Voters not affiliated with either major party also are opposed by a two-to-one margin....
So as Pelosi and POTUS like to remind us, they won, and they can (and will) do whatever they want. I don't have a problem with the 'winners' being the gov't, but I do have a problem with them taking over the media.... something all Americans should be wary of. I don't want my independent search for voices I want to hear , interrupted by the voices of those I don't. The gov't should not be telling me I HAVE TO LISTEN! That is UNAMERICAN.

LinkTV - TV Without A Moral Compass
Catholic League draws our attention to a malicious and deliberate attack on the Catholic church, perpetrated by LinkTV and partially funded by tax dollars:
If LinkTV had a moral compass, they would not be mocking individual religions in a hurtful and deliberate way. Would they?
I checked out their list of Board members and founders and there seems to be an underlying 'save the world' theme. 'Save the world' is often translatable to 'kill off the poor worldwide' which is a special project of the UNPF. Is this where hate is coming from?
A battle of cultures is definitely in full swing.
Culture of Life vs Culture of Death
Good vs Evil

(UPDATE) The video has been removed from LinkTV. It can still be found on YouTube.
.
...This video first aired last summer, right after a professor from the University of Minnesota intentionally desecrated the Eucharist. Now it’s being shown again. At first we thought this was just another loony attack, but then we found out that Link TV is funded by foundations that support anti-Catholicism. To wit: the Ford Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Wallace Global Fund and George Soros’ Open Society Institute all fund Link TV, and all are generous contributors to Catholics for Choice, a notoriously anti-Catholic front group. Worse, of the three co-producers of the video, one of them—ITVS—is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a public entity.
So here we have the urbane bigots in the foundation world, and a taxpayer-funded organization, underwriting anti-Catholicism....

"EWTN Grabs NBC Fumble"

NCRegister:
CatholicVote.org’s new pro-life ad will air Sunday on EWTN’s “Faith Bowl” broadcast.
EWTN added the ad following NBC’s decision Wednesday to refuse to air the pro-life ad during this Sunday’s Super Bowl broadcast.
As first reported by the Daily Blog, CatholicVote.org was told by NBC and the National Football League that the pro-life ad was rejected because they don’t want to air any ads about ‘political candidates or issues.’
The Daily Blog has repeatedly contacted NBC officials, unsuccessfully seeking a more detailed explanation of why the pro-life ad was rejected.
This shouldn’t be interpreted to imply that the Daily Blog is recommending that Catholics and other pro-lifers should boycott watching Sunday’s football extravaganza. We’re not.
But we do recommend tuning in beforehand to EWTN’s pregame “Faith Bowl.” Along with airing the CatholicVote.org ad that’s too “controversial” for NBC, the show will feature Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Mark Loretta and Antonio Soave, a former professional soccer player and current director of the Benedictine College School of Business, analyzing the role Catholicism and Christianity play in professional and collegiate sports.
The Faith Bowl airs at 5:30 p.m. Eastern, half an hour before Super Bowl XLIII’s opening kickoff at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium.

Stem Cell Science - A Study In Media Bias
Joel Johannesen at Proud To Be Canadian writes about the media's warped sense of reality...they're liars:
Joel's right. He goes on to delineate the extent of their lying support for embryonic stem cell research:
MSM .... All Death All the Time (thus their love-in with Obama!)
...The lie perpetrated by the liberal-left and their media regarding stem cell research is being perpetrated in new Obamerific ways today.
They’re all reporting on this new study which, after a year of consideration, the Food and Drug Administration OK’d today, for a scientific study using EMBRYONIC stem cells on humans.
But they’re making out like it’s some sort of an Obama election-induced advance for science. That’s an outright lie. And worse, they know it...
Joel's right. He goes on to delineate the extent of their lying support for embryonic stem cell research:
...The Bush Administration banned federal taxpayer funding (only) for EMBRYONIC (only embryonic) stem cell research, on ethics grounds (it requires the harvesting of stem cells from human baby embryos… hello!). ADULT stem cell research—the only research which has ever led to any medical cures or treatments, and there have been lots —is and always has been funded and of course legal in every way, and in America for the past several years, huge advances using ADULT stem cell research has been made. There are few if any ethical issues surrounding ADULT stem cell research.
Bush also made available a set number of human embryos, from which the stem cell lines harvested could be used for EMBRYONIC stem cell research, and which would be eligible for federal funding; and the private sector could continue, as they always could, to fund research using those lines (the fact that private money was so scarce speaks to the ethical problems associated with it, and the paucity of promise in EMBRYONIC research). And research went on.
No stem cell research was ever “banned” by the Bush administration.
And here’s the kicker: The EMBRYONIC stem cell lines being used in the announced study today are those lines authorized by George Bush, although the study used no federal funding...
MSM .... All Death All the Time (thus their love-in with Obama!)
50 MILLION AMERICANS GONE MISSING - CNN Didn't Notice
If you were expecting some coverage of the March For Life, you were disappointed. Only the internet is alive. Liberal mainstream media front page of the day award (no I won’t create a graphic for that) goes to National Post, for breaking all the rules in the Liberal Media Handbook, pissing off most of their “journalists” and staff, and much of their reader base in the process, and going with a religious-friendly theme—CHRISTIAN!—on their entire front page today, in honor of—get this—Christmas. Wow. Amazing. And beautiful.

Liberals Are Not Pro-Woman, They Are Pro-Abortion
American Thinker:
Its much harder to justify abortion as the panacea of feminist freedom and choice when one woman like Sarah Palin can overcome all their objections to valuing EVERY life - by her own everyday example of feminist freedom. She exemplifies every woman's freedom to choose to be fully active, fully intelligent, fully successful, and fully woman. Its especially the exercise of the freedom to be fully woman and human that irks the abortion lobby, and most threatens it.
....The continuous assault on Sarah Palin is not so difficult to understand. In fact, it can be summed up thusly: she's a woman opposed to abortion. You see, when a man says he's opposed to abortion, women who disagree can accuse him of trying to control a woman's body and/or simply not understanding how a woman feels about dealing with pregnancy, career achievement and defeating the "good ole boy" network. But, how are they going to justify that to a Sarah Palin, who has raised a family, been elected to the highest office in her state and has gained a reputation as a corruption fighter? And a woman decided to keep, raise, and love a Down syndrome child, her son Trig.
Governor Palin represents a stake in the heart of the abortion movement and for that reason alone, she must be sniped at, ridiculed and trashed until her name becomes a scarlet letter on the bosom of every woman who dares to challenge the inner sanctum of liberal orthodoxy....

"To a great extent the level of any civilization is the level of its womanhood. When a man loves a woman, he has to become worthy of her. The higher her virtue, the more her character, the more devoted she is to truth, justice, goodness, the more a man has to aspire to be worthy of her. The history of civilization could actually be written in terms of the level of its women."~Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

National 'Catholic' Reporter OUTS Itself

National 'Catholic' Reporter has chastised the Bishops for their laudable efforts at catechizing American Catholic voters in what may turn out to be the most disastrous election for the unborn.
Nevermind that the Bishops have not backed a particular candidate and have been speaking on point about the Church's teachings on the value of life. N'C'R accuses the Bishops of being partisan. They are themselves using Democrat 'talking points' to try and DISCREDIT their own Bishops !
Its long past the time that any remaining 'authentic' Catholics on staff should find someone authentically Catholic to write for. Dioceses need to start canceling subscriptions immediately.
Bad enough that the Obamamaniacs are threatening to censor the secular media for actually asking questions of their candidates, but now the 'Catholic' media is going to censor Catholic Bishops on Obama's behalf? Are they nuts?
Too bad the Church doesn't have a copyright on 'Catholic'. I sick of the 'anti' squad wearing Catholic badges. Time to rout them all!!
Apparantly the road to Hell contains a lot of paper boxes.
(Maybe the National 'Catholic' Reporter will be the Obama nation's propaganda machine for the new 'American''Catholic''Church'! I suppose they have a list of 'good' Bishops ready to go....)

For Power And Pensions

A very frank essay on the decline of the 'old media', by columnist Michael Malone:
...Picture yourself in your 50s in a job where you’ve spent 30 years working your way to the top, to the cockpit of power . . . only to discover that you’re presiding over a dying industry. The Internet and alternative media are stealing your readers, your advertisers and your top young talent. Many of your peers shrewdly took golden parachutes and disappeared. Your job doesn’t have anywhere near the power and influence it did when your started your climb. The Newspaper Guild is too weak to protect you any more, and there is a very good chance you’ll lose your job before you cross that finish line, ten years hence, of retirement and a pension.
In other words, you are facing career catastrophe -and desperate times call for desperate measures. Even if you have to risk everything on a single Hail Mary play. Even if you have to compromise the principles that got you here. After all, newspapers and network news are doomed anyway - all that counts is keeping them on life support until you can retire.
And then the opportunity presents itself: an attractive young candidate whose politics likely matches yours, but more important, he offers the prospect of a transformed Washington with the power to fix everything that has gone wrong in your career. With luck, this monolithic, single-party government will crush the alternative media via a revived Fairness Doctrine, re-invigorate unions by getting rid of secret votes, and just maybe, be beholden to people like you in the traditional media for getting it there.
And besides, you tell yourself, it’s all for the good of the country . . .
(h/t american catholic)
