Marshall McLuhan

In the Garden with the Guru
Adventures with Marshall McLuhan
AN ESSAYby Bob Rodgers

A six-foot-high hedge separated me from the garden next door but not from its voices. It was my first Sunday morning in the house I sublet on Wells Hill Avenue by Casa Loma in Toronto. I couldn’t make out what was being said but one of the voices sounded familiar. I moved closer and parted the hedge just enough for a covert glimpse of my new neighbours. A middle-aged man was lying on his back in a hammock with a book held up vertically above his head as he read aloud. Next to him a young man sat in a deck chair with a book on his lap. The young man said: “Vico’s cycles.” The older man said: “Vicious Circles.” “Viscous cyclones,“ said the young man. I was awestruck. My God, I thought, I must be the only person in the world at this moment listening to what looks like a tag team reading Finnegans Wake. Later I learned I had been witness to a regular occurrence. Eric McLuhan and his father, Marshall, were reading at each other. .......

CINEMA VITA

This is a great idea. Maybe other cities/dioceses will pick it up!

We can't have TOO MANY counter-cultural events.!

Quote of the Day

"Real freedom, concrete freedom, the freedom that can actually be defined, claimed, and granted, was not the opposite of obedience but its other side.
The abstract, unreal freedom of the liberal intellect was really nothing more than childish disobedience, amplified into anarchy."

UNREAL

Should transit employees (or their unions?) decide which issues the ads should support? Public transit should not be censoring to the extent of trying to prevent a public discussion.

These posters are in no way offensive, unless someone (?) considers QUESTIONING the free -for-all abortion non-policy in Canada an offense in itself. THEY DO. They absolutely want to stick to their 'mantra' that there is no ongoing debate. All Canadians agree that any pre-born child is fair game for poisoning or dismemberment. NOT. Its a lie. A lie that the transit service in Fredricton, and Hamilton apparantly wish to support.

Quote of the Day

Today is the Conversion of St.Paul.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

This struck me as hilarious!! Wait a minute.... its the UK! Not Canada!

REAL BOOKS

I am currently half -way through "Father Elijah" by Michael O'Brien. It's wonderful. Having read "Island of the World" over Christmas, I anticipated it would be. Both novels are ripe with cultural and historical references. The characters are extremely real (uncomfortably and recognizably real). The imagery is profound. The plots are exciting.

I have not read any new novels for years. I have not found any inspiring ones to read, and thus have limited my 'novels' to re-reading those classics in my childrens' highschool curriculum.

Now I'm afraid I shall have to read all O'Brien's novels cover to cover, ravenously, until they are all consumed. Who knows what duties will suffer in the meantime! Such self-control I will have to muster!

REAL DOCTORS

(Dr.Pedro Nunes)

Portuguese Medical Association Defies Government Order to Accept Abortion
By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman
PORTUGAL, January 21, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com)-

The Portuguese Medical Association, defying threats by the socialist government's health minister to begin criminal proceedings against it, has re-elected its president, Pedro Nunes, who has defied the government's order to change the Association's ethical code to allow abortion.
In his victory speech, Nunes promised to maintain the independence of the Medical Association from the government, signaling his resolve to preserve the association's ethical code.
The Association does not "have to do the work of the government nor the work of the opposition," said Nunes, and added that his organization should not fear to criticize what it believes to be worthy of criticism. "Doctors are on the side of the Portuguese," he said.
The Portuguese code of ethics states that "doctors must maintain respect for human life from its beginning", and "the practice of abortion or euthanasia constitutes a grave ethical failure".
Following the government's decision to decriminalize all first-trimester abortions in 2007, socialist health minister Antonio Correia de Campos ordered the Medical Association to eliminate the prohibition against abortion from its ethical code in October. He was supported by the Portuguese Attorney General, who had issued a legal opinion condemning the passages.
However, Nunes refused, insisting that it was an internal matter, and that the government had no authority to intervene in the affairs of the Association. Although Correia claimed he was filing a criminal complaint in November, no action has yet been taken against the group.
The group's presidential election was seen as a referendum on the abortion issue, because Nunes was the only candidate who promised from the beginning to maintain the ethical code. His main rival, Miguel Leão, wanted to change to code to comply with the government's demands.
The issue of the ethical code made the recent elections the most intense and bitter in memory. Although Nunes' pro-abortion rival garnered the most votes in the first round, the January 17th runoff between Leão and Nunes resulted in Leão's resounding defeat, 56 to 44 percent.
Nunes' current term will last until 2010.

There are a few DOCTORS still in Canada, but the Cdn Medical Assoc. does its best to discourage them, including sorting them out before med school. Sigh.

OBAMA vs LIFE

Obama’s email statement today on the anniversary of Roe vs Wade:

"Thirty-five years after the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade, it’s never been more important to protect a woman’s right to choose. Last year, the Supreme Court decided by a vote of 5-4 to uphold the Federal Abortion Ban, and in doing so undermined an important principle of Roe v. Wade: that we must always protect women’s health. With one more vacancy on the Supreme Court, we could be looking at a majority hostile to a women’s fundamental right to choose for the first time since Roe v. Wade. The next president may be asked to nominate that Supreme Court justice. That is what is at stake in this election.
Throughout my career, I’ve been a consistent and strong supporter of reproductive justice, and have consistently had a 100% pro-choice rating with Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America.
When South Dakota passed a law banning all abortions in a direct effort to have Roe overruled, I was the only candidate for President to raise money to help the citizens of South Dakota repeal that law. When anti-choice protesters blocked the opening of an Illinois Planned Parenthood clinic in a community where affordable health care is in short supply, I was the only candidate for President who spoke out against it. And I will continue to defend this right by passing the Freedom of Choice Act as president. . . ."

Just in case any one is deluded about Obama's loyalties, they're not to LIFE. The largest killer of black children in the US is ABORTION, so apparantly it isn't the success of the African American community either. Apparantly, his loyalty is to women who wish to have the right to kill their children, should their existence become inconvenient. WHy? I mean really, why??

Martin Luther King Jr.

When remembering heroes we should try to focus on the substance of their message and the reality of their sacrifices.

Here is an excellent post, quoting from King's 'But,If Not' sermon of Nov.5,1967.

Spirtual Renewal and Abortion

Here is an interesting perspective by Maria Vitale.

No-one should under estimate the 'added value' gained by making a spiritual journey out of their quest for justice.

Funny, Funny , Canada

Mark Steyn's latest at 'The Corner'. Outlining the part of the HRC 'complaint' concerning 'Little Mosque'.

The whole situation is hilarious. Canadians, sitting idly with blank expressions watching CBC and nodding our (collective!) heads. Collectively burying our heads in the 'sand'.

RICHARD WARMAN

Here's an update on the 'HRC' scandal, particularly Richard Warman's background. How Richard Warman is getting so little vilification is a mystery of Canadian culture.

HRC - how is it that Richard Warman's 'pretending' incites less hate than real posts discussing real things?

HRC - perpetuating a need for themselves - Canadian tax dollars at work for ...whom?
