'State Of Mind'

Scrappleface:

Bush: U.S. Citizens to Welcome Our 51 State

Although it cost more than the Louisiana Purchase and the Alaska purchase combined and offers far less acreage, President George Bush today said he thinks “U.S. citizens will welcome our 51 state with open arms.”

The announcement that the financial realm collectively known as “Wall Street” had applied for statehood follows a week in which the federal government took control of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and insurance megalith AIG. It also comes as news breaks that the U.S. plans to spend up to a $1 trillion to “rescue” other foundering financial firms.

President Bush noted that the newest state is not so much a geographical swath of land as it is “a state of mind.”

“Once the statehood process is complete,” the president said, “We will find that the people of Wall State are just like those in the rest of our great nation. They’re hard-working, industrious and patriotically-dependent upon the centralized government to insulate them from the consequences of their own actions.”

Who's The Meanest?

Booker Rising:

"Politik Ditto responds to a study by the Wisconsin Advertising Project, based at the University of Wisconsin. The study shows a reversal from previous months, where Sen. McCain put out more negative ads than Sen. Obama. The black conservative Democratic blogger, who supports Sen. John McCain for president, writes: "Again, this is why you can't believe anything the liberal media tells you. From all their accounts it's been John McCain whose been so 'mean' and 'negative' in going after Barack Obama on the campaign trail, but once again the FACTS tell a different story."

Politik Ditto adds: "With this news it becomes more and more obvious that Sarah Palin has gotten in BO's head. To think, one would expect Barack to have more respect for her considering that it wasn't too long ago that he was Sarah Palin: a virtually unknown politician with fierce ambition who quickly vaulted to the top of their party. Therefore by continuing to disrespect ('nothing but a small town mayor', 'pig with lipstick is still a pig') Palin, Barack not only continues to prove how disingenuous he is, but further risks alienating the voting bloc of middle-class workers who could make a big difference in this upcoming election."

Movement Afoot

Coordinated effort to strategize against abortion:

"The pro-life advocates gathered at the "Planned Parenthood: BAD for America" summit, organized by the Pro-Life Action League (PLAL), of Chicago, and shared techniques that have proved successful in impeding Planned Parenthood's objectives across the country. This is the first time so many pro-life groups from across the country have gathered in a single location to address fighting Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider.

According to the Daily Herald, Eric Scheidler, PLAL communications director, and his father Joe Scheidler, renowned pro-life advocate, facilitated discussion and drafting of a joint resolution on steps the pro-life coalition will take to combat Planned Parenthood in the coming years.

They focused on the need to make Americans aware of the "hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars" that non-for-profit Planned Parenthood, "gobbles up" by performing abortions, as well as the necessity of spreading the pro-life message to the black population.

"African-Americans have far more abortions than any other group," Scheidler said. "But that's because Planned Parenthood targets them so much more than the rest of the population."

Scheidler also said that pro-life activists will make a greater effort to pray outside Planned Parenthood "clinics."

In a pre-conference interview, Scheidler said, "We really are going to take a multifaceted approach to this. But most importantly we will be bringing anti-abortion Americans out to fight (Planned Parenthood) on their land."

Turning Up The Heat

Priests For Life is visiting Washington D.C.:

"The purpose of our "Walking the Halls of Congress" mission is to get Americans to hear the descriptions of what abortion is. When that's the starting point of the debate, we win.
Keep in mind, this comes before any discussion of the legality or morality of abortion. All we're asking of pro-abortion lawmakers is what they mean by the word 'abortion.'"

OBAMA: The New Lowest

Stay tuned to Jill Stanek for the updates on Obama's desperate attack on Gianna Jessen, abortion survivor:

"In response are the following statements:

Statement from Gianna Jessen:

Mr. Obama is clearly blinded by political ambition given his attack on me this week. All I asked of him was to do the right thing: support medical care and protection for babies who survive abortion - as I did 31 years ago. He voted against such protection and care four times even though the U.S. Senate voted 98-0 in favor of a bill identical to the one Obama opposed. In the words of his own false and misleading ad, his position is downright vile. Mr. Obama said at the recent Saddleback Forum that the question of when babies should get human rights was above his pay grade. Such vacillation and cowardice would have left me to die if his policies were in place when I was born. Thank God they were not.

Statement from Jill Stanek:

It is despicable, repulsive and beneath contempt that Barack Obama would attack Gianna Jessen. She is a courageous abortion survivor and living miracle who would not be with us today if Obama's policies had been in place when she was born. Mr. Obama continues to mislead the American people on this issue, he voted four times against medical care and protection for babies who survive abortions in the Illinois State Senate, while the U.S. Senate was voting 98-0 to pass an identical bill. Mr. Obama needs to come forward and tell the American people that he understands people like Gianna Jessen, and that he will support and enforce Born Alive Infant protections -- that these are living, breathing human beings who have come into our world and deserve protection in the law and should receive medical care at health care facilities. These babies have the same rights as the rest of us."

Eugenics Messy Business

from Canadian Physicians:

"Aborting children with Down's Syndrome will not raise an eyebrow in some crowds. Hell, some might condemn anyone who would choose to bring these 'little monsters' into the world. But the cost of perfecting humanity may cost a few 'normal' children. Eugenics is a messy affair and always has been..."
.....................................................................

It still amazes me how disinterested the mainstream media is in any of this. Global warming = major tragedy, big news, mighty cause. Babies dying from testing aimed at eugenics = no big deal.

I guess when it comes down to the bottom line, we can count on the media/left to not really care HOW the babies die, so long as there are fewer being born.

The UN Is Good For What?

Please remind me. It seems I can only think of their absurdly inhuman attitudes toward mankind and their propensity to bully vulnerable nations into inhumane practices.

Yet another example of their decreptitude is posted in LifesiteNews:

"At United Nations headquarters last week, UN Population Fund (UNFPA) executive director Thoraya Obaid called for more funding for population programs, including reducing fertility, promoting “reproductive health services,” and “de-stigmatizing” sodomy..."

Coupled with example after example of financial corruption and intellectual fraud, the UN is an insult to taxpayers world-wide. Membership does not seem justified.

'A Tale of 2 Down Syndrome Babies'

Paul Kengor at NCR:

"This election may come down to a tale of two babies with Down syndrome.

The first of the two babies is obvious: Sarah Palin, a mother of four in her 40s, a governor, a very busy working woman who already “had it all,” was told only 10 months ago that the child she was carrying in her womb had Down syndrome. True to her principles and integrity, she chose life when other mothers choose abortion. That baby, born in April, is now a member of her family. It was a choice that has thrilled pro-lifers and has excited them more than any other aspect of the Palin pick.

It is a beautiful reminder of the difference between the McCain-Palin and Obama-Biden tickets...

Obama’s intransigence was best shown in the eyewitness experience of Jill Stanek, the nurse at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., who provided testimony to Obama’s committee in the Illinois Senate. To Stanek’s amazement, Obama was unfazed by her devastatingly sad testimony of cradling a newborn baby who had just survived an abortion. That baby was refused medical care. He was sent to the soiled utility room to endure a heart-wrenching, excruciating death over the course of 45 minutes.
“He was too weak to move very much,” remembered Stanek, in testimony for which the hospital fired her, “expending any energy he had trying to breathe. Toward the end, he was so quiet that I couldn’t tell if he was still alive unless I held him up to the light to see if his heart was still beating through his chest wall.”

Why was this poor, innocent, helpless little boy sentenced to this unjust, wicked execution? Because of this crime: He had Down syndrome.

That Down syndrome child was unable to affect Obama’s oft-expressed “least-of-our-brothers” compassion and protection.

But a Down syndrome child fully received Sarah Palin’s motherly compassion and protection. And pro-lifers everywhere feel the difference in this selective 'social justice.'..."

State Legislated Morality Bites

"Powerful societal elites, pandering to the public’s endless desire for pleasure, have been so successful in obtaining and retaining power that we, in Canada, now actually live in a country that for all its undoubtedly good aspects, is effectively, in the area of morality, a totalitarian state. The activities of the Human Rights Commissions are merely the latest and most blatant manifestation of that fact."

John B. Shea, 'Physicians and the Ontario Human Rights Code' - via The Great Pumpkin.

Free-Speech vs Judicial Activism - Which is More Dangerous?

Star Parker on Barney Frank:

"Barney Frank isn't just another liberal. And he is much more than just an openly gay congressman. He is a powerful legislator who happens to be chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.

This makes Frank a central and influential player in government's response to the current mortgage crisis that has rocked our financial markets. The decisions that Frank, a Democrat, makes can put taxpayers on the hook for not just billions, but trillions of dollars. These are decisions that effect our pocketbooks but also our freedom. They influence the size and scope of government in the lives of every American citizen.

So, yes, I care a lot about what Barney Frank thinks, and how he thinks, on any subject that I know matters to him...

In Frank's mind, liberalism is tantamount to respect and compassion. And conservatism amounts to intolerance and self-righteousness...

Barney Frank calls James Dobson "one of the leading advocates for imposing moral choices on the rest of us."

Frank introduced last year the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2007 making it a federal crime for an employer to deny employment to an individual because of their sexual orientation.

Dobson talks on the radio. Frank, a congressman, wields major political power and wants to pass legislation imposing his sense of right and wrong on every employer in America, and yet he sees Dobson as the threat to freedom.

As the many Americans who quietly go to church and unobtrusively raise their families have sat by quietly and passively over the years, left-wing activists such as Frank have hijacked our nation and our culture. Now that those who care about traditional values respond, they are called intolerant.

Initiatives to constitutionally define marriage as between a man and a woman have not come out of the blue. They are in response to left-wing inspired judicial activism that, if ignored, would result in homosexual marriage becoming a formal and legal reality in America..."

Kmiec Obstinately Wrong

Ramesh Ponnuru slams Doug Kmiec's 'latest folly' at The Corner:

"Let me try to clear up some of the confusions Kmiec perpetuates by way of a blunt example that a pro-life activist suggested to me. Without the born-alive legislation in the law, it would be legal for a doctor to take a pre-viable infant—one expected to live for only a few hours—and kill her by bringing a hammer down on her skull. Under the law, that behavior would be illegal. Obama argued that providing any legal protection to that infant would be dangerous and unconstitutional.

Kmiec argues, further, that it is somehow novel for the law to define live birth in a way that includes pre-viable infants. Not true. Many states define born-alive infants in the same way and provides the same protections to them.

One more thing that Kmiec gets badly wrong: He claims that Obama is "on record" thinking that the definition of "health" in the Supreme Court's abortion jurisprudence should be restricted. (The Court says that even post-viability abortions must be allowed if necessary for the pregnant woman's broadly defined health.) Actually, Obama is on record claiming that the Court's definition of health is much more restrictive than it in fact is. He is not urging the Court to revisit its jurisprudence; he is putting a misleadingly positive spin on that jurisprudence..."
(h/t ProEcclesia)

Kmiec just keeps digging a deeper and deeper hole, as pointed out at American Papist.

'The Everlasting Man'

John Zmirak writes an excellent article on Chesterton's 'The Everlasting Man':

"The audience for this apologetic is a reading public not so different from our own -- composed in large part of lazy ex-Christians, hazy post-Christians, New Age skeptics, old-fashioned modernists, and wistful, romantic materialists. The book was written in answer to The Outline of History by H. G. Wells -- a novelist who turned in serious moments from science fiction to fictional science. (He also predicted that progress and contraception would lead at last to an all-white planet, opining once that "those swarms of blacks, and brown, and dirty-white, and yellow people . . . will have to go." So much for Wells's liberality, and powers of prediction.)

Where Wells tried to explain away, through airy appeals to evolution, man's sense that he is unique among the animals and his chronic craving for God, Chesterton decides instead to squat beside the caveman and try to suss out the anthropologists...

...This book -- for all its flourishes, for all the times when the writer seems to jump the shark -- is a stirring answer to one, straightforward question: Who are you people, and what on earth do you want? "

Well worth a full read at Inside Catholic, and of course, read 'The Everlasting Man' as well!

Capstick : Not All Moms Work

BigBlueWave posts:

During a radio call in show, Helen Ward, president of Kids First Canada, recounted how she called each party to talk about their childcare policies.

During her conversation with Ian Capstick of the NDP, Helen said that all mothers were working mothers.

His response?

"THAT IS POPPY COCK AND YOU KNOW IT!"

...................................................

Well, I'm pretty sure that I'm working...hard! How about it 'stay-at-home- Moms'? Shouldn't we all let Mr. Capstick know how hard we work? What happened to the 'party of the people'? Now its just the 'party of the people with two pay-checks'?

Jessen Ad may Backfire - Scott Ott

*warning:satire*
Scott Ott at Scrappleface reports:

(2008-09-15) — A new TV ad in which the survivor of a botched abortion calls attention to Sen. Barack Obama’s repeated opposition to protecting such babies could backfire on the pro-life group that created the commercial, according to the Democrat presidential candidate.

In the TV spot, Gianna Jessen, 31, calls on Sen. Obama to support born-alive infant protections because she claims that babies should have basic human rights “no matter how they entered our world.”

Sen. Obama today said that “While I suppose all life eventually becomes precious, that woman just proves that some lives are more precious than others.”

“Apparently a well-meaning medical professional saved baby Gianna’s life, ruining her mother’s hopes for a successful abortion,” Sen. Obama said. “To make matters worse, three decades later Ms. Jessen has become part of the problem in this country…another vicious collaborator with John McCain in the epidemic of brutal, negative political advertising.”

The Illinois Democrat said the question that American voters should ask themselves is this: “Are you better off now than you were 31 years ago before Gianna Jessen was inadvertently born? I know that I’m not.”
......................................................

It SOUNDS like B.O. logic. Killing children after they are born (apparantly different than infanticide) is a kindness to the mother AND the abortionist - asking to support keeping born babies alive is political viciousness. Yep, that's America's rising intellectual giant, the man for the future, the beacon of CHANGE. Change reality and live in a (scary)fairytale. Presidential.

Born Alive and Kicking!

Born Alive Truth is up and has must see videos of their new ad featuring Gianna Jessen, abortion survivor, and also her interview on 'Hammity and Colmes'(FOX).

(h/tJill Stanek)

The problem with debating with Colmes et al... is the problem of reality vs denial. If the other party insists on sticking to the lie, it won't be much of a debate.

Who makes a better President/Prime Minister - the better liar?

As a Canadian, I can only wish for similar opportunities to discuss life issues - especially when the Conservative Gov't fronts a health ministr who promises the 'discussion will not be RE-OPENED', as if all Canadians are equally ignorant of reality.

NOTE TO THE CONSERVATIVES: WE'RE NOT!!

NCR:"Palin Family Values and the Abortion Debate"

"Perhaps the most absorbing element of this election season is the spectacle of abortion activists and media analysts grappling with both Gov. Sarah Palin’s decision to spare the life of her Down syndrome child and her teenage daughter’s decision to continue her pregnancy and marry the father of her unborn child.

As a group of talking heads on television expressed their amazement at the state of the Palin household, I thought of William May, my moral theology professor at the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, and his penchant for poking holes in the tortured logic of abortion advocates. May could nail the source of abortion supporters’ present discomfort in a nanosecond: Palin’s family choices directly challenge arguments that justify abortion as the “lesser evil.”

Since the ’60s, reproductive rights activists have presented abortion as perhaps the best solution for the scourge of teenage pregnancy, inner-city poverty, gender inequality, and the suffering experienced by disabled infants and their families. But May didn’t buy those arguments: “If abortion is the ‘lesser evil,’” he used to tell our class, “then the alternative — keeping the baby — constitutes the ‘greater evil.’ But how can that position be proved?”...more
