All's Well at Home, as Gustav Moves On

Hurricane Gustav left Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands virtually unscathed as it heads through the Gulf of Mexico towards Louisiana . For Caymanians, unscathed is relative to the devastating damage perpetrated by Ivan in September 2004. The Islands have just finished recovering, and noone is taking hurricane warnings lightly .

We were nervous about having our son Edward alone at home during the storm, but his preparations on the house, and in the Adoration Chapel were well done. Although we made out o.k., we continue to pray for our neighbors in Jamaica and those who suffer in Haiti.

Back to the Culture Wars

Fr. Raymond deSouza:

"..The Palin selection indicates that the McCain campaign wishes to sharpen this contrast. A few months ago, it was widely thought that this election would leave behind the red-state/blue-state Bush elections. Instead of cultural politics, there would be personality politics. McCain, the noblest war veteran in America, versus Obama, the anointed one who would heal the planet and calm the oceans. It would be a new kind of election.

Then surprises. The man of change, Obama, chose the safest, most insider running mate imaginable, Joe Biden. The old man, McCain, went with the groundbreaking outsider. It is all upside down, but the result will be a campaign quite familiar. In a culture war election, Governor Palin will be a not-so-secret weapon."

Bishops On Pelosi

A running list of Bishops active in rebutting Nancy Pelosi's amazingly ignorant misrepresentation of Catholic doctrine is provided at TeDeum.

Ahead of the Game

Beldar Bloglists his previous posts on Sarah Palin:
"I'm enthused — and oh-so-pleasantly surprised! — about John McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate, for all of the reasons stated in my previous posts about her [and new ones, which I'll be adding to this table as I write them)..."

More on Palin

Proecclessia:
"And when it came to picking a running mate, Sen. McCain didn't go "safe". He went BOLD ... picking a female governor with real accomplishments in taking on and winning against government corruption within her own party. The REAL fresh face in this election belongs to Gov. Sarah Palin. Inexperienced? As Mark Levin points out in my earlier post, Gov. Palin has more executive experience in her 2 years than Senators McCain, Biden, and Obama combined..."

Te Deum:
"Let me ask this: If then Gov. Bill Clinton of Arkansas, at 46 years of age, was experienced enough to be elected president, then why would anyone question the competency of a 44 year old Governor from Alaska to serve as Vice President..."

BigBlueWave:
"Palin proved her pro-life credentials in a powerful way earlier this year year when she gave birth to her fifth child, born with Down Syndrome, despite receiving pressure from doctors to abort. At a time when a vast majority of Down Syndrome children are aborted..."

JillStanek:
"John McCain just hit a grand slam.
With McCain's announcement today that AK Gov. Sarah Palin will be his running mate, Barack Obama's abortion problem just got a whole lot bigger..."

CatholicMom:
"Fasten your seat belts. We're in for a very bumpy ride..."

And for your daily dose of sardonic humour - Scrappleface:
"..Sen. Obama, who chose an elderly white man name Joe Biden as his running mate rather than his rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, said he avoided picking Mrs. Clinton 'to spare her the humiliation that John McCain plans to impose on Sarah Palin.'

'The only way she’ll be able to break into the old-boy network of the presidency,' said Sen. Obama, 'is over John McCain’s dead body. McCain is literally the man who stands in her way.'"

O.K. I'm envious. The American campaign is going to be sooo much more fun than the Canadian one!

Waiting Anxiously

Our 18 yr. old is guarding the house from Gustav...by himself! We (hopefully) get back to Cayman on the 15th, but meanwhile he's the guy in charge. We're hoping Gustav will not turn into an 'Ivan'!

Real Woman - Update

McCain has chosen Gov.Sarah Palin (Alaska) as his running mate:

"By making Palin just the second woman to win a spot on a major party's presidential ticket, McCain has "clearly served notice that this campaign is going to wage a strong effort for women voters," Ann Lewis, a senior adviser to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, told USA TODAY."

The Republican ticket is looking like a good bet for Christians. I am very pleased to find they have such a fine example of woman/mother/Christian/politician all rolled into one. Makes Biden look a little weak...

Wells vs Levant - Canadians to Pay

Ezra Levant attacked by crazy Christian hater Rob Wells:

"It’s not Wells’s first time using the CHRC to prosecute his hatred for Christians. They’re a perfect fit for each other, Wells and the CHRC. Wells drives around town, uttering anti-Christian filth; the CHRC staff surf around the Internet, publishing racist and anti-gay filth. It’s surprising that the CHRC hasn’t hired Wells to be one of their online hatemongers – he could do what he loves, and get paid for it.

Wells is a favourite of the CHRC. He has used the CHRC to harass the Christian Heritage Party. And he was the complainant against Fr. Alphonse de Valk and Catholic Insight magazine, that drained them of $20,000 in legal fees. That complaint was dismissed by the CHRC when they started getting political heat over it, but Wells is now appealing that dismissal.

Between making little Catholic children cry at church and filing nuisance suits, where does the man find the time?

His complaint against me is rooted in my recent republication of Rev. Stephen Boissoin’s editorial column in the Red Deer Advocate several years ago. That was the column in which Rev. Boissoin expressed his Christian opposition to gay rights – and it resulted in a complaint filed against him at the Alberta HRC. After five grueling years of bureaucratic bullying, Rev. Boissoin was sentenced to a $7,000 fine, a lifetime ban against giving any public sermons that were “disparaging” to gay rights (he was also banned from sending private e-mails about the subject) and he was actually ordered to publicly renounce his religious beliefs on the subject. Seriously – read the sentence here for yourself if you can't believe it.

I republished Rev. Boissoin’s column in full, as a sign of my freedom and as an indication that I don’t grant the government the moral authority to tell me what I can or can’t say. I’m pleased to say that Canada’s leading gay lobby, EGALE, agrees exactly with my position. They know that Wells’s fascism is an embarrassment to their cause. And – more than an embarrassment – it endangers anyone who might be the target of an overweening state, like gays themselves were in the past..."

Good to know that the Canadian tax dollar is being used to the benefit of us all, so effectively. Again.

What Would I Do To Protect My Daughters

NOT give them the HPV vaccine for starters:

(LifesiteNews):

"The New England Journal of Medicine posted two articles this week that asked why two human papillomavirus vaccines have been so widely distributed given their unproven effectiveness and high costs.

Gardasil by Merck Sharp & Dohme, which has already received tremendous criticism for the severe and fatal side-effects experienced by users, and Cervarix by GlaxoSmithKline were the two drugs called to question.

As reported by the New York Times, Dr. Charlotte J. Haug, editor of The Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association, whose editorial appeared in Thursday's issue of The New England Journal, said, 'Despite great expectations and promising results of clinical trials, we still lack sufficient evidence of an effective vaccine against cervical cancer. With so many essential questions still unanswered, there is good reason to be cautious.'

Both vaccines were tested for relatively short periods of time, revealed Dr. Haug, and researchers are yet to prove whether or not the vaccines offer lasting immunity and if a user's natural immunity to other strains not eliminated by the vaccines will be compromised. Dr. Haug said it is not certain if the protection offered by the vaccines will even lead to reduced rates of cervical cancer."

Its gratifying to know that the CRTC has no qualms about ads that are untruthful and potentially dangerous.. and that Canadian politicians are willing to risk our teenage daughters health by funding programs to vaccine girls in school with unproven drugs -for the sake of some illusory gains with the electorate.

My girls are not in government schools. Nor are my boys. Its not worth the risk to hand them over to people who don't give a fig about their welfare.

No Room For Morality in Medicine - Huh?

CALGARY HERALD:

"It is profoundly troubling to observe something as personal as the right to live by one's conscience superceded by the collective right to medical services, which is not the least bit endangered in this instance.

There is no justification for accusing a doctor of professional misconduct for acting within the bounds of conscience. Any woman, for instance, whose doctor refuses to refer her for an abortion can turn to the Yellow Pages to find agencies willing to help her.

If the College enacts this policy, it will mean that doctors will leave Ontario, further adding to the physician shortage there, according to Saskatchewan MP Maurice Vellacott, who has introduced a private member's bill, C-537, which would amend the Criminal Code to protect health-care workers' conscience rights.

"The policy jeopardizes or blackmails doctors," says Vellacott. The College's motivation to draft the policy came, Vellacott says, not because of a complaint filed with the provincial human rights commission against a doctor, but rather as a means of pro-actively preventing such complaints.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services put forward a regulation to protect doctors and other health-care professionals from being fired or losing their certification if they refuse to provide services that run counter to their personal beliefs.

Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt described the regulation as "protecting the right of a physician to practise medicine according to his or her moral compass." Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc., objects to the regulation, saying it risks compromising women's ability "to manage their own health care" because of politics and ideology.

The real ideology at work is one that dictates an individual is not entitled to freedom of conscience if they do not morally support a pet liberal cause. The College should be protecting doctors' rights to live by their consciences, not aiding and abetting human rights commissions in sacrificing those rights on the altar of political correctness."
(h/t bigbluewave)

It occurs to me, that if the doctors remove 'morality' entirely from their profession by disallowing the practice of morality by their own peers, they become purely purveyors of technical skills, and should no longer be allowed the 'special' status that has afforded them an elevated place in our society. They will not warrant our trust. Ironic, that at the very moment they wish to eliminate any pretense of 'caring', they are also trying to lock themselves in as the sole arbiters of life and death, the only authority on rubrics of human value.

Its a power grab, and they are not the 'good' guys.

Go for it Ontario - the rest of us can certainly use more GOOD doctors!!

"Catholics Against Obama Joe Biden"

Senator Biden - a relatively bad choice:

MR. RUSSERT: You have changed your position on abortion. When you came to the Senate, you believed that Roe v. Wade was not correctly decided and that you also believed a the right of abortion was not secured by the Constitution. Why did you change your mind?

SEN. BIDEN: Well, I was 29 years old when I came to the United States Senate, and I have learned a lot. Look, Tim, I’m a practicing Catholic, and it is the biggest dilemma for me in terms of comporting my, my religious and cultural views with my political responsibility. And the decision that I have come to is Roe v. Wade is as close to we’re going to be able to get as a society that incorporates the general lines of debate within Christendom, Judaism and other faiths, where it basically says there is a sliding scale relating to viability of a fetus. We can argue about whether or not it’s precisely set, whether it’s right or wrong in terms of its three months as opposed to two months, but it does encompass, I’ve come to conclude, the only means by which, in this heterogeneous society of ours, we can read some general accommodation on what is a religiously charged and a publicly-charged debate. That’s the, that’s the decision I’ve come to.

"Obamacide"

American Thinker writer J.M. Barber :

" Barack Obama has properly earned the dubious distinction as the single most liberal Senator in Congress during his brief, albeit overstayed, tenure. But a cursory review of his words, deeds and associations reveals that this ivory-towered Harvard boy is no run-of-the-mill lefty. He's an extremist among extremists...

Although Obama's love affair with partial-birth abortion has served to chip away at his finely polished veneer, his opposition to the Born Alive Infants Protection Act (BAIPA) has revealed to the world that backward extremism permeates his marrow...

The man's devotion to the pro-abortion industry is so fixed that he would rather allow the murder of newborn babies than give an inch to the sanctity of human life..."

And yet, Doug Kmiec's head has not exploded!?

Bolt of Lightning

We're waving our Jamaican flag today, the last day of the Olympics, and celebrating our Westin/Webster Jamaican roots. Jamaica conquered the track, men and women, and vastly improved our Olympic watching experience.

The Obama Tapes

Dawn Eden has the links for the latest on Obama denying he's been lying about NRL lying about him denying the right to life for babies born alive...including links to his Senate speech supporting infanticide :

"Obama, who vehemently accused National Right to Life of "lying" about his Born Alive vote, has yet to display the leadership and accountability to at least admit that he himself has repeatedly lied about both his vote and his reasons for voting as he did.."

Good work everybody. If the Catholics for Obama persist, they will at least not be able to do it without knowing better. Right?

Politically Correct Healthcare

Stand Your Ground has a post on the 'human rights' crisis facing western society today:

"Secular fundamentalists can't stop complaining about Christians allegedly trying to force their religious beliefs on them. The truth however is - it's the secular fundamentalists that have been forcing their views on us.

Let me reiterate: Whatever rights and freedoms we still have left - we've inherited them from the days preceding Trudeau's "human rights" legislation. Once the so called "human rights" act had been passed and Orwellian tribunals (commonly known as "human rights" commissions) had been installed - we became second class citizens; since then our constitutional rights and freedoms have been continuously taken away to empower special interest groups. "

The expansion of the feeling of empowerment that the HRC's have, to self-monitoring civil 'authorities' of major professions, will affect greatly our access to actual health care. We will be limited to politically correct health care - a very disturbing development, especially in consideration of recent attempts by the CMAto establish itself as the final word on our most basic right - the right to LIFE.

....................................................................................
Caymanians would do well to take note of the strife in other 'civilized' countries like Canada , and take steps to protect itself from ignorantly following the same path to repressive conformity of thought and speech promoted by the secular religionists. Succumbing to the pressure of our British governors to conform to UN and EU 'standards', will affect every area of Caymanian life, and wipe out every vestige of genuine Christian culture and Caymanian spirit of independance and integrity.

THEY DON'T REALLY CARE ABOUT CAYMAN! We are only a 'trade-off' in Britian's own struggle to maintain anything remotely British within Britain itself. The 'BRAVE NEW WORLD' is on the horizon, and we're not going to like it.

Sorry NEA...

Lifesite News reports on California court's 'change of heart':

"The California Court of Appeal for the Second Appellate District ruled Friday that 'California statutes permit home schooling as a species of private school education,' effectively vacating its February 28 ruling that shocked homeschooling families in that state and across the nation.

The February ruling effectively would have reclassified an estimated 166,000 children as truants. The appellate court had decided California's compulsory education law required parents without certified teaching credentials to pack their six to eighteen year-old children off to a full-time public or private school or face legal penalties.

After enormous public outcry from homeschool advocacy groups and many others, including Governor Schwarzenegger himself, the Court agreed in March to reconsider the case, and invited interested parties to file amicus briefs in a new hearing.

The same three judge panel has now concluded, 'California statutes permit home schooling as a species of private school education' and adds the law does not require homeschooling parents to possess teaching certificates."

Now, if only Germany was teaching history a bit better, they might avoid repeating past 'mistakes' and allow a little freedom for parents hoping to avoid gov't social engineering and propaganda...

John Edwards Update

*satire alert

John Edwards continues to confess...

"..In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Mr. Edwards confessed that stories and photos in the Weekly World News were accurate, despite his previous denials.

'I have, in fact, met on more than one occasion with a large-headed alien from another planet,' said Mr. Edwards. 'The pictures in the Weekly World News are real..'"

A Pilgrim Perspective

I am just catching up a bit, being without most media this summer, so this is a bit tardy...

Sophie Caldecott gives her perspective on what the media missed at WYD in Sydney:

"Despite the fact that a representative from almost every corner of the world could be found at this dynamic event, despite the atmosphere of elation, energy and love, and despite many interesting talks, the main -- perhaps only -- interest of the English media was the relatively small group of protesters who wanted to make sure that their objections to the Catholic Church didn't go unheard.

The angle the media was trying to spin on the story seems absurd to someone who was there, singing and dancing in the brightly coloured crowd. This was not just any crowd -- when else and for what other reason in the world would that many young people get together and be so considerate and friendly toward each other, so joyful and excited and unselfconscious without being drunk or on drugs? There was clearly something else going on at that gathering, something unique and fascinating that the media completely failed to pick up on, and it had nothing to do with protesters..."

NEA- The Making of a Zombie Nation

The NEA in the US, the largest teachers' union, has adopted resolutions that put them squarely in the 'repress the minds to control the population' camp. They seem to think they have a (not God-given, surely) mission to convert all publicly educated 'families' into far-left ideologues. In order to accomplish this, they have adopted resolutions to repress parental (surely God-given) rights to educate their children according to conscience. They will now lobby every level of gov't to obtain their Orwellian dream - a submissive country of propagandized subjects.

This should fit in well with Obama's perception of a 'New America'.

Good times ahead!

Ezra Left Holding The Bag (and it smells bad)

Lifesite News relates the final conclusion of the Alberta HRC...there was no basis for complaint, in the circumstances. Don't bother cheering. The inexcusable treatment of a journalist/editor for using his talent AS IF HE WERE IN A FREE COUNTRY, spending years of his valuable time and energy that may have benifitted the nation otherwise in never to be known ways, is not dealt with at all. They still believe they have the right to call him back on the carpet at any time, for any further 'questionable' behavior, and treat him the exact same way.

Its not over.

Horrific Bus Crash - Prayerful Response

A busful of Catholics headed to a Marian Days gathering in Missouri, lost control and crashed near Houston:

"As their charter bus approached a gradual turn in the early-morning hours, investigators say, a retreaded front tire blew. The bus sheared the guardrail off a bridge, then plunged about 8 feet onto a hillside above a creek.

At least 17 people have died from injuries suffered in the crash. About 30 more remained hospitalized, including six in intensive care at Sherman's Wilson N. Jones Medical Center..."

"...Back on the highway, pilgrims returning from the Missouri festival to honor the Virgin Mary stopped along the road to step on the dirt and grass where the bus came to a final rest.

Among the first to arrive was Theresa Thuong Pham, 14, and her family. On a patch of charred dirt, they placed a small bouquet of yellow, white and red flowers that earlier in the day adorned the Virgin Mary shrine in Missouri.

Moments later, other travelers pulled off the road and began to add to what quickly became a shrine that hundreds would visit before sunset." (h/t custos fidei)

Prayerful people have a way of dealing with tragedy that is incomprehensible to the secular world.

“For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear, I will help you (Isaiah 41:13).”

God, make me brave for life: oh, braver than this.
Let me straighten after pain, as a tree straightens after the rain,
Shining and lovely again.
God, make me brave for life; much braver than this.
As the blown grass lifts, let me rise
From sorrow with quiet eyes,
Knowing Thy way is wise.
God, make me brave, life brings
Such blinding things.
Help me to keep my sight;
Help me to see aright
That out of dark comes light.

Obamanation Defense Lies in...Lies!

Deal Hudson restates the facts about Obama's support for infanticide :

"When Obama spoke on the floor of the Illinois senate against the protection act -- in fact, he was the only senator to do so -- he made it clear that his reason for rejecting it was his fear of its overturning Roe v. Wade:

'Whenever we define a pre-viable fetus as a person that is protected by the Equal Protection Clause or the other elements in the Constitution, what we're really saying is, in fact, that they are persons that are entitled to the kinds of protections that would be provided to a -- a child, a 9-month old -- child that was delivered to term. That determination then, essentially, if it was accepted by a court, would forbid abortions to take place. I mean, it -- it would essentially bar abortions, because the Equal Protection Clause does not allow somebody to kill a child, and if this is a child, then this would be an anti-abortion statute..'"
