"Choose Life" in Virginia - UPDATE
UPDATE Gov. Kaine Blocks Use of State Funds For Embryonic Stem Cell Research
Virginia Governor Timothy Kaine signs bill allowing "Choose Life" license plates
dailypress:
Hard to believe someone could rationalize opposing "Choose Life" plates that help fund crisis pregnancy clinics. Kind of puts Planned Parenhood motivations in perspective when they react as if charitable help for pregnant women is competition for their business.

I wonder what a Planned Parenthood license plate would read? "Ignorance Is Bliss"?, "Kill The Deficit"?, "You First"?...
Virginia Governor Timothy Kaine signs bill allowing "Choose Life" license plates
dailypress:
....Under state law, more than 350 people must sign up for a plate before Department of Motor Vehicles can produce it.
Republican Sen. Ken Cuccinelli, who added the "Choose Life" proposal onto a bill creating license plates promoting the Northern Neck and Shenandoah National Park Trust, said at least 450 people had prepaid for the plate.
"It's a simple way to advance the cause of life at no cost to Virginia taxpayers," Cuccinelli said.
After the first 1,000 plates are sold, $15 of the $25 annual fee would go to crisis pregnancy centers.
Each year, the money generated would go to Heartbeat International, a Christian pregnancy resource organization, to be distributed to nonprofit centers in Virginia that meet the organization's "Commitment of Care" standards. According to the group's Web site, those include giving "honest and open answers" and not offering, recommending or referring clients for abortions.
Cuccinelli said about 40 of the 75 pregnancy centers in Virginia meet those standards and would be eligible for funding....
..."The fact that the governor and the General Assembly wasted time and resources debating whether or not to fund deceptive non-medical establishments is shameful," said Jessica Honke, director of public policy for The Virginia League for Planned Parenthood, which receives some state funding.
Kaine said if the groups felt strongly about it they should seek a specialty plate of their own.
"I believe the Constitution would require the state to approve that plate to protect against any viewpoint discrimination," he said.
Planned Parenthood and NARAL said they had no plans to do so at this time....

There Is Intelligent Life...

Saul Anuzis, contender for GOP chair, tells it like it is:
"First of all, you are never going to legislate the issue of abortion and morality. Basically, what you have to do is establish a social norm and educate the people as to why it’s right or wrong," .....(h/t Suzanne)
..."This is not something that is going to happen tomorrow. This is not something that’s going to happen quickly. This is a long-term process. This has been a long-term battle, and I think it will continue to be a battle years down the line," Anuzis explained. "I think you have to educate people year by year, election by election."
The main bit of education needed is that an abortion is not a 'procedure', it is the killing of a child. And not just for 'religious' folks.

REAL LEADERSHIP In URUGUAY

LifeSiteNews:
Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez, a medical doctor, yesterday fulfilled his promise to veto pro-abortion legislation that was passed only three days ago by the Senate in a narrow vote of 17 in favor out of a total of 30 cast.
Although Vazquez vetoed provisions of the law that eliminated criminal penalties for surgical abortions, he did not veto other provisions that allow chemical abortions and treat sodomy as a "right."
Tourist Minister Hector Lescano informed the French Press Agency that the Senate does not have enough votes to override the veto. He added: "In the next few hours, the legislative power will be notified, but what's certain is that (the veto) has already been signed and recorded. It's an irreversible fact that underscores the president's determination."
Just prior to the Senate vote, the Uruguayan Episcopal Conference warned that Catholics who cast votes in favor of abortion would be refused Holy Communion. The announcement by the bishops came in the wake of statements made by Archbishop Nicolas Cotugno of Montevideo, who stated in no uncertain terms that any legislator who voted for abortion would be "ipso facto excommunicated." He added that a formal excommunication might also be issued, and that he would support such a measure in union with the Pope and other bishops (see previous LifeSiteNews coverage at http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/nov/08110403.html).
The law would have eliminated criminal penalties for virtually all abortions carried out during the first three months of gestation. Currently, abortion is penalized in the nation's criminal code in all cases, although judges have the discretion of reducing or eliminating penalties under certain circumstances....

Now that's what I call a LEADER - unlike some who won't even allow abortion to be addressed by government . Like Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
